When I arrived back in Spokane a few days ago it was a huge relief to be home, safe and in familiar surrounds. Anyone who says you don't need to stay grounded with some sort of home and family is a much stronger person than me. It was so great to see mine after 21 days, 48,000 miles on 19 flights on 9 different airlines with seven stops in six countries and not a single missed or even delayed flight (other than the normal 1 hrs delays common these days).
Being able to fly Business was the deal breaker for me in two ways. Of course the comfort of wider seats, fully reclining to a fully flat bed. The food and alcohol was available non stop if you just wanted to eat your self into the added seat width which was very tempting and I did my share of late night snacking in between the dinner and breakfast on these overnight flights between continents. Oh and the movies required some pre planning by checking the upcoming flights and setting my movie schedule so I got to see all the ones I had missed recently. I caught the movie "Up in the Air" toward the beginning of the journey and "Amelia" came toward the end and both were by far the most entertaining as I felt I was living the storylines.
But the most important other than the comfort was the little added protection or bubble afforded upper class passengers by allowing access to the departure and transit lounges, expedited boarding with seperate line and even immigration had faster lines for these type passengers and it felt damn good to have those perks on this trip. Honestly, the lounges were like hidden oasis in the madness and stress that define air travel today. Part of my hope on this trip was to find some of the intrege, excitement, and the feeling of doing something few are able to expereince because they were afraid to think big or believed they were not strong enough to accomplish. A lot has changed since the 60's and my intro to commerical air travel and with the increased mobility we all have around the world that's have been offset by the restrictions we must have to make us safe at some level. Most today do not see flying as something truely exciting, romantic or that enhances the overall trip experience. Instead, it feels like the misery before the pleasure. I have never lost that excitement but I have spent a lifetime wishing I had that more comfortable seat until this trip. The lounge in Hong Kong gave me a much needed place to take a shower, shave and feel human again and made it possible for me to see Hong Kong for several hours after a 12 hr overnight flght.
The weather was perfect for the whole trip as I have mentioned many times before but I truely feel blessed to have had clear skies and the wind to my back the whole journey. The was the most physically and mentally challenging experience I have ever attempted and is even more remarkable to me considering my personal limitations. Adrenalen, fear and determination can can be powerful tonics to help us do remarkable things despite handicaps.
I will spend the rest of my life replaying events as we all do with a new mother lode of treasure from travels. I truely felt like a person of the world for 3 weeks and it was amazing, scarely as hell and without a doubt a life changing experience. If you want to see my videos, I will be uploading for the next months and they will give some life to the destinations shared in words and pictures.
When I'm gone and someone looks up and wonders where that plane flying over their head is going, I'm looking down from 38,000 feet and smiling back at you my fellow adventures so happy flights and safe travels everyone!
